Visit to Carbury Castle, Sunday 23rd of September

Members are reminded that the final outdoor meeting, of the current programme, will take place next Sunday 23rd of September at 3.00. Members are asked to meet at Carbury Castle, Carbury, Co Kildare. The village is located on the R402 between Enfield and Edenderry. We will be guided around the spectacular ruins by Conleth Manning (President) and courtesy of the Beattie family. Carbury Castle is a monument of great importance and was home to the Colley family, ancestors of the Duke of Wellington. The site’s origins, however date back further to the Fitzhenrys who developed the motte and constructed much of the defensive landscape which we see today.

Following our visit to the Castle we will proceed to Drummin House, by kind invitation of Mr. Grattan de Courcy Wheeler. Mr. de Courcy Wheeler will speak to us about his family, house and gardens. This will be followed by tea.

The charge for the trip is €5 and it is members only.

Also please note that we will have to pass through some fields to access the castle and after the wet summer appropriate footwear is advised.
