Excursion to Kileen Cormac – Sun 21 Aug 2011

Our next outing is on Sunday 21 Aug to Kileen Cormac. Meet at the site at 3 pm.

Killeen Cormac is a relatively small, enclosed graveyard close to the banks of the river Greese on the Kildare/Wicklow border. The folklore pertaining to its foundation and the presence of seven ogham stones (notable both for their number and their location in this part of the country) have been the primary points of interest to researchers up to now. This talk/tour will be adding significantly to what is known about the sites at it will include a description of the results of a geophysical survey recently undertaken in the field around the graveyard, generously co-funded by a County Kildare Archaeological Society Research Grant and by the landowner, Mr. David Crampton.

Directions:

The site is located in Colbinstown, between the Old N9 and Dunlavin. If travelling on the M9, exit a Junction 3 (Ballitore), turning left towards the Old N9.  At the N9 turn left again and pass Crookstown Service Station. Shortly after this turn right (signposted Colbinstown and Dunlavin). After about 2.5km, the site can be seen in a field on the right hand side. Parking in the field courtesy of the landowner.
