(2) Co. Kildare – Newbridge Local History Group
The Forgotten Heroes of World War 1
Newbridge Local History Group in conjunction with the Curragh Racecourse are planning a unique event where a history lecture will be held in conjunction with a race meeting.
However this history lecture is in itself unique where the topic will focus on the extraordinary ,if totally neglected role of our horses, donkeys mules etc during WW1.
As you know,Kildare in general and the Curragh in particular had a most significant involvement in the acquisition of horses for the war effort. Not only that, but many hundreds of these animals were shipped to the front from the now demolished Remounts complex which was located within a few yards of where the new Curragh stand is now located.
Conscious of this unique association with the past ,the Curragh Racecourse were very generous in not only agreeing to allow us host this event from their new facility, but they have offered a very significant discount on admission (€15) plus making their luxurious Classics Suite available and they will provide light refreshments and a race card for all our attendees.
We hope to start the Lecture at 3.00 ,then allowing for a Q and A we are all set for the first race at 4.20 .on Fri Aug 30th.
We then have the use of this amazing facility for a unique afternoon and evening of the Irish Cambridgeshire Flame of Tara Stakes meeting.
I guess the downside of this opportunity is the fact that the suite has a max accommodation of approx 50 guests.
We have,as you might expect a significant interest in this event from folks who are pure historians to others who just want to see inside this amazing €80 million complex from the viewpoint of one of its top corporate locations.
Both the Federation and the Kildare Archeological Society have been genuine supporters of our Local History Group in the past ,so if you would like to take this opportunity to draw this special event to the attention of some of your members ,would you please make sure they contact with our Chairperson Raphael Ryan as soon as soon as possible.,but no later than Fri Aug 23 rd so we can arrange the appropriate badges etc. raphaelryan@yahoo.co.uk
